Tinkeryard: A Playground designed and built by Drew Students!

K-2nd Grade Engineering Design

Designing and Building a TinkerYard: If we designed a STEAM based playground what would it look like and how would it work?

How do you design a playground or structure for kids? Who is involved in the process? What tools and materials are involved? What are the steps?  What is required to actually build your idea so that others may use it?  While learning about alternative playgrounds and creating structures we investigate and utilize these questions.  Students worked with STEAM Artist in Residence, Jeff Mather to design and construct the TinkerYard using the Engineering Design Process.  Students researched ideas, decided on the themes for the stations, sketched their ideas, created composite sketches, measured the site and materials for the site, cut, sanded, stained, and screwed together the parts for the TinkerYard. Please observe the photos to see evidence of the process.
